crunked

Recently some players on the Indianapolis Colts American football team have been drawing attention to themselves in a bizarre way during timeouts. Normally static defensive players have been seen making hip-hop dance moves, bouncing around, yelling, and generally energizing themselves and the crowd. They call it getting crunked or crunked up .

For those not familiar with hip-hop culture, it seems an odd term to use. However, for those in the know, ‘crunk’ (or ‘krunk’) is a word originally meaning drunk or high (or both). To ‘get crunked’ would be to get high, but is now just as likely to mean to get excited. And the word does not just apply to people. A party could be ‘crunked up’ to become ‘crunk’, and no doubt much more fun for everybody concerned.

Although it has moved from the Atlanta hip-hop scene into general US slang, no one seems to know for sure what the origins of the term are. It could be a variant of crank , which is well established as a slang term for, or for taking, an amphetamine drug. It could be a blend of crazy and drunk . What is known is that US talk-show host Conan O'Brien brought the word to a wider audience when he used it to replace any expletive that might be ‘bleeped out’ – making his one of the few television shows where you could hear the phrase ‘crunk you, crunkface’.
